Honda announced it is recalling at least 748,481 cars due to defective airbags. The scope of cars that are affected by the recall are model year 2009-2013 Pilot cars, and 2011-2013 Odyssey cars that were manufactured between March 13, 2008, through December 21, 2012.

According to Honda’s notice to National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the recall arises out of defective driver’s airbag modules manufactured by Neaton Rome, Inc. During the assembly of these defective devices, they failed to install all of the six rivets that attach the airbag cover to the airbag module, which “could alter the performance” of these devices. In other words, they may not work.

Honda became aware of the defective airbag modules as early as July 2012. Honda denies receiving any warranty claims or complaints from consumers for this issue, nor have there been any claims alleging death or injury related to this concern.

Vehicle recalls, as compared to “technical service bulletins,” always relate to safety. If you own one of these defective cars, you should be receiving a notice from Honda with instructions on how to have the corrective action performed on your car.
