The task of selecting a new vehicle can be daunting enough, but it’s exacerbated exponentially by the uncertainty that comes with buying a lemon.
No one wants to end up with perpetual maintenance issues that turn their huge new purchase and financial commitment into a giant piece of scrap metal. As the Lemon Law Experts, we ran through the numbers and identified which vehicle manufacturers end up in court most frequently. We looked at all lemon law cases defended by Consumers Union Legal Services (CULS) between January 1st, 2011 and December 31st, 2014, sorted them by make/model for each year, then averaged out those results for an overall score.
The following is based on data provided exclusively to AutoSlash by Consumers Union Legal Services (CULS). So if you’re thinking about buying a certain make/model, these are the odds that your lemon could land you in court.
Hyundai: The Hyundai Accent, Elantra, Santa Fe, and Sonata were the cars CULS handled most frequently. Collectively, these vehicles scored second-highest in overall lemons (second only to Kia’s Rio). All four models averaged a 46 percent rate of cases defended per year, with Santa Fe coming out on top at 50 percent.
Toyota: Although not as widely publicized as its woes with the recall debacle from several years ago, Toyota continues to have reliability issues, which result in many lemon law cases being filed each year. The Yaris, Corolla, and Tacoma had the highest rates of cases won by Consumers Union Legal Services for an average score of 41 percent For those three combined.
Nissan: The Nissan Versa, Sentra, and Titan had an average score of 34 percent. These vehicles also averaged a 34 percent rate of cases defended per year. Nissan vehicles accounted for six percent of all cases handled by CULS between 2011 and 2014.
Kia: Kia’s Rio was the worst offender in our analysis, with a 50 percent case win rate on 35 cases that CULS successfully defended. On a more positive note, its Optima model had a 12 percent case win rate on only 13 cases during the same period.
In addition to being top performers from Consumers Union Legal Services’ perspective, Hyundai and Kia have been recognized as two brands with low risk for defects by Consumer Reports.
